App Store screenshot sizes, without the spreadsheet

Apple's screenshot rules look intimidating because the documentation lists every display class ever shipped. In practice you upload one tall iPhone set and, if your app runs on iPad, one iPad set. App Store Connect scales your images down to the smaller device classes for you, so the job is to produce the largest set at pixel-perfect dimensions and let Apple do the rest.

Upload the biggest size and let Apple downscale

App Store Connect asks for images per display size, but it will reuse your largest iPhone set for the smaller iPhone classes unless you deliberately override them. That means a single 6.9-inch set covers modern iPhones, and a 12.9/13-inch set covers iPad. Override only when a smaller device genuinely shows a different layout — a tablet split view, say, or a compact layout that hides a feature you are selling. Everything else is duplicated work you will have to redo on every release.

Exact pixels, no alpha, no rounded corners

Screenshots must be flat RGB images at the exact pixel dimensions for the class, in PNG or JPEG, with no transparency. If you export a mockup with a transparent background, flatten it onto a solid or gradient colour first — an alpha channel is one of the most common rejection reasons at upload time. Do not add your own rounded corners or drop shadows that bleed off the canvas; the store frame already crops and rounds the thumbnail.

Ten slots, and the first two do the work

You get up to ten screenshots per display size per localization. Almost nobody scrolls past the first three on the product page, and the search results carousel shows two or three depending on orientation. Design slot one and two as a standalone pitch — one clear promise each — and treat slots four to ten as depth for the people who are already interested. Ordering matters more than count: an eight-image set with a weak opener performs worse than three strong ones.
