The Google Play promo video, and how to make it earn its slot
Google Play does not host your video. You paste a YouTube URL into the listing and Play embeds it over your feature graphic. That single implementation detail changes how you should produce it: the video lives on a public YouTube page as well as in the store, the feature graphic acts as its poster frame, and anything YouTube shows around it — end cards, suggested videos, ads on your own channel — becomes part of the experience.
Set the video up correctly on YouTube
Use a direct watch URL, not a playlist or a Shorts link, and make the video public rather than unlisted so it can be embedded reliably. Turn off ads on that particular video if your channel is monetised — nobody should see a pre-roll before your own store listing. Skip end screens and cards, which cover the last seconds of your footage. Landscape 16:9 at 1080p is the safe format; a vertical video will be letterboxed inside the store's landscape frame.
The first five seconds decide the rest
Play users tap the play button on top of your feature graphic, which means they have already opted in — but they have also already seen a static frame, so a slow logo intro wastes the only attention you bought. Start with the app in motion. If you need branding, put it at the end, where a viewer who watched the whole thing is ready to be told what to remember.
Length and the one-idea rule
Thirty seconds to a minute is the practical range. Longer videos are fine technically but the drop-off is steep, and Play surfaces a truncated experience anyway. Pick one idea — the single thing your app does better — and show it three ways rather than showing nine features once each. A promo video that tries to be a feature tour ends up being a list nobody finishes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upload a video file directly to Google Play?
No. Play takes a YouTube URL. The file lives on YouTube, so its settings — visibility, ads, end screens — affect how it appears in the store.
Should the promo video be vertical?
No. The store frame is landscape, matching the feature graphic. A vertical video gets pillarboxed and reads as a mistake.
Does the feature graphic still show if I add a video?
Yes — it becomes the poster frame with a play button over it, so design it to work as both.
Make it in the browser. Drop a screenshot into a 3D device, move the camera, export a still or a video. No install, no account.
