Tablet mockups and why stores keep asking for them

Tablet assets feel like extra work for a small slice of users, and then you discover that both stores treat them as a quality signal. Google Play grades listings per form factor and can down-rank an app on tablets for having only phone screenshots. The App Store simply will not show your app on iPad without an iPad set. The work is smaller than it looks if you plan the capture properly.

Landscape, and a layout that earns the width

The point of a tablet screenshot is to show that your app uses the extra space. A stretched phone layout — one column floating in a sea of margin — actively hurts, because it tells the reviewer your app is not adapted. If you have a split view, a sidebar, a two-pane reader, that is the screenshot. Capture it in landscape, since that is how most tablet users hold the device for anything other than reading.

Sizes to target

For the App Store, produce a 2048 × 2732 portrait or 2732 × 2048 landscape set, which covers every iPad class. For Play, roughly 1920 × 1200 or 2560 × 1600 comfortably fits both the 7-inch and 10-inch slots. As with phones, exact numbers matter less than staying inside the ratio limits and keeping every image in the set identical in shape.

Reuse the composition, not the pixels

Keep the same background, accent colour and caption style as your phone set so the listing reads as one family, but re-shoot the interface at tablet size rather than pasting the phone capture into a tablet frame. A viewer can tell instantly, and app review teams have seen the trick a thousand times. Building the tablet set from the same mockup project with a different device selected takes minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to provide iPad screenshots?

Only if your app supports iPad — but if it does and you skip them, the app will not appear properly for iPad users.

Portrait or landscape for tablets?

Landscape, in most cases. It shows the wide layout that justifies tablet support in the first place.

Can I reuse phone screenshots in the tablet slots?

Technically sometimes, but it looks like padding and undercuts the point of the tablet set.

Make it in the browser. Drop a screenshot into a 3D device, move the camera, export a still or a video. No install, no account.
