Light or dark: which theme belongs in your store listing

If your app has both themes, the store forces a choice, because a set that switches theme halfway through reads as inconsistent. The right answer depends less on which one looks better in isolation and more on what surrounds the image: the store page itself, the device the viewer is holding, and the background you put behind the device.

Contrast against the store, not against your taste

Store pages render on a light or dark background depending on the viewer's own system setting, so you cannot count on either. What you can control is the mockup background: a dark interface on a mid-tone or light gradient stays legible on both store themes, and a light interface on a deep background does the same. The failure case is a dark screenshot on a near-black background, which vanishes entirely for the half of your audience browsing in dark mode.

Choose the theme your product is known for

If your app is a note-taking tool people use in daylight, showing it dark is a mismatch even if dark looks classier in a render. If it is a sleep tracker, a code editor or a camera app, dark is the honest presentation. When there is a genuine tie, dark backgrounds photograph better in 3D mockups — glass edges, screen glow and rim lighting all read more clearly — which is a small but real tiebreaker.

Show the other theme once, deliberately

Theme support is a feature people search for. Rather than splitting the set, dedicate one image later in the carousel to it: the same screen in both themes, side by side, with a caption naming it. That way the set stays coherent, the feature is still communicated, and you did not build two complete sets to say one thing.
